Appreciating the Value of Being Gentle to Yourself: Self-Compassion

Being overly hard on ourselves when we fall short of our own expectations might be easy in a world when achievement and perfection are highly valued. But as well as our mental health, our general success and enjoyment depend on our cultivating self-compassion.



Like a good friend, one who practices self-compassion treats themselves with the same degree of understanding and care independent of their success or failure. Three fundamental components define this concept: attentiveness, compassion for others, and kindness to oneself.


One could start practicing self-kindness by treating oneself patiently and gently. This becomes much more important when times are hard, or we make mistakes. Of criticizing ourselves for our flaws, we should show self-compassion by providing words of encouragement and comfort.


Second, realizing our shared humanity helps us to keep in mind that we are not by ourselves confronting the challenges we find. The intrinsic intricacy of human existence will cause one difficulties and suffering. Admitting that we have experienced something like this would help us to grow in empathy and feel of belonging among the people around us.


At last, attentive listening involves being present in the moment and avoiding judgment of one's own ideas and emotions as they arise. When faced with internal events, one can stay non-reactive instead of being caught in self-criticism or obsessing. This helps us to answer challenging events with more resilience and clarity.


Studies have linked self-compassion practices to many advantages including less anxiety, sadness, and stress symptoms. Other benefits are improved mental health, increased self-esteem, and more fortitude against adversity.


Developing self-compassion also enables us to have stronger connections with others. The degree to which we exercise self-compassion and tolerance directly determines the degree of our capacity to show compassion to people around us. These closer ties help to create a more sympathetic and supporting society.


Having the great virtue of self-compassion can help us to have better contacts with those around us and with ourselves. We might all find more enjoyment and fulfillment in life by being more present, by realizing our shared humanity, and by being gentler to ourselves. Let us not forget the need to develop self-compassion and treat ourselves gently in our search of happiness and personal development.
