Keeping it Real: The True Reasons We Never Fully Replace Anything (Why We Modify, Not Change)

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

One of the most puzzling challenges we face is how we fit into the enormous mosaic that is our existence. Who are we, really, and can we change who we are at our core? This is a problem that has baffled philosophers, psychologists, and everyday citizens alike for centuries. But the answer might be simpler to grasp than we think right now. Alterations to our personalities are more common than radical transformations. In order to understand why and how we prefer adaptation over change, we will have to look into the complexity of the human spirit during this examination.

The Unchanging Center.

In the core of every person is a unique quality that makes them an individual. It's like coming across a rock in the middle of a torrent. Our core identity consists of the most fundamental aspects of our personality, including our core values, beliefs, and traits. Think of it as the unchangeable DNA that shapes our personalities and actions. Despite dramatic shifts in our outer appearance, our acquisition of new skills, and our exposure to novel experiences, this core part of our identities remains constant.

Artist as Sculptor: A Metaphor

Imagine that our most fundamental self is a perfect block of marble. Imagine now that you are a highly accomplished sculptor. With time and practice, the sculptor wears away at the marble, carving even more intricate details into the stone. The sculpture evolves throughout time, gaining complexity and nuance, but the marble remains the same. In the same manner that we strive to become our best selves, so does the sculptor. We polish it, we hone it, we remove its flaws, and we add to our understanding of it, yet the stone at its center remains unchanged.

Life as a Canvas That Is Always Evolving

The canvas of life is constantly shifting, and each of us plays the dual role of creator and creation. We buy new paintbrushes and experiment with different techniques and hues. To show growth and change, we occasionally paint over established designs with bolder colors. Old designs are sometimes covered up by newer ones. While our surroundings may change, our fundamental identity—the canvas—remains constant. It's the constant canvas upon which the masterpiece of our life is painted.

The term "River of Experience" is used here.

Our journey through life is similar to a river that meanders through diverse ecosystems. The river carves new courses across the landscape as it flows, leaving its mark wherever it goes. Life experiences have a similar effect on us. They influence our outlooks, mental shifts, and final conclusions. We have the capacity to readjust, to take in new information, and to hone our methods of living. However, the river is still a river, and we are still ourselves, while evolving in some ways and preserving our core identity.

Recognizing and Accepting One's Weaknesses

Perfection is an illusion, like an unattainable oasis in the desert. What if, instead of striving for perfection, we accepted our human frailties and learned to love ourselves as we are? Our humanness lies in our quirks, our idiosyncrasies, and our one-of-a-kind traits. Modification allows us to focus on fixing our flaws without having to throw them away entirely. It's an admission that growing up isn't about eradicating our flaws so much as it is about learning to live with them and accepting that they're a necessary part of who we are.

One's own unique inner symphony

If you will, consider our history and culture to be a symphony. The three most fundamental aspects of a song are its composition, melody, and rhythm. Additional depth and complexity are added by introducing new instruments later in the piece. The real world resembles that symphony in many respects. The structure and substance of music are unaltered regardless of how many different compositions we try or how many different instruments we master. We conduct our lives like conductors of a symphony, and the music of our existence is our own creation.

Finally: Taking a Positive View of Change

In the grand scheme of things, change may be the only constant, but at our own essence, we remain unchanging. We don't change who we really are, but we can always work on being better versions of ourselves. This realization prepares the road for self-acceptance and allows us to appreciate the beauty of our permanent essence even as we take joy in the process of transformation. The goal of living should not be to become someone else, but rather to develop into the best version of oneself that one is capable of becoming. So, let's be grateful for the ride, the twists and turns, the changes, and the constant core of who we are.

Common Concerns (FAQ)

That being said, let's move on to some frequently asked questions about developing oneself and finding one's true path.

Q1: Is the capacity to edit limited to a small group of people, or do most people have it?

A1: Every person has the potential to go on a journey of self-improvement. It's not about changing your core personality; rather, it's about understanding yourself better and making positive adjustments on purpose.

Q2: How can I know if my motivations for undergoing change are sound?

A2: Consider your motivations carefully. Do you plan to make adjustments that will put your values, your development, and your happiness into harmony with one another? If yes, then you are making progress in the right path. If you're doing it solely to impress other people, you should reevaluate your motivations.

Q3: To what extent may I transform myself without completely losing track of who I am?

A3: In response to your question 3, the answer is "yes." Therefore, it is crucial that we find common ground. The essence of your being rests on your unique individuality, therefore be mindful of that. Your core identity should grow from the experience, not wither away.
