Let’s Talk about Mental Fitness

Indicative of one's clarity of thought and decisiveness is their level of mental fitness. Fitness, in this context, is analogous to the state of being physically able to carry out one's daily activities.

Therefore, why is it so important to take care of one's mental health?

Improving your mental health may not only help you, but others around you as well.

Indeed, being here and now. Mindfulness improves our ability to recall information, pay attention, and remain focused despite the presence of distractions. As a result, you'll have more energy to take pleasure in life, better get along with others, and make more meaningful connections.

the ability to think and act rather than just react. When we are able to exert more discretion over our automatic thoughts, we are in a better position to choose an appropriate response that is less impulsive and more logical. It improves our social lives, our worldview, and the range of options we have at our disposal in any given situation.

mental capacities that are expanded. Improving your capacity to pay attention, take in new knowledge, retain it, apply it, organize your thoughts, manage your time, and communicate can benefit your life in many ways. The capacity to remember important dates, names, and events may greatly benefit personal relationships.

an increase in one's level of happiness and optimism - With maturing self-awareness comes the ability to see one's own thoughts and reform them in more positive forms. Kind thoughts and compassion create an optimistic outlook, which then inspires better actions.

The ability to trust oneself has improved. Having a positive attitude on life helps us feel more connected to ourselves. When we focus on our positive traits, our self-esteem and self-efficacy (confidence in our own talents) increase. Mindfulness training leads to increased levels of both self- and other-compassion.

pattern formation skill that may be used to every aspect of life. There will always be a need to innovate new practices that are better suited to the current conditions. Self-efficacy, mindfulness, and efficient time management all contribute to our ability to create new habits.

Rest easier. A better quality of sleep is correlated with both increased mental fitness and increased physical fitness.

How why it's so important to work on keeping your mind and body in good shape?

Because of a negativity bias, our MONKEY brains only generate one positive thought for every three negative ones. In the long run, this might affect mental health. Common manifestations of bias include a "all or nothing" mentality or a polarized perspective in which we see some situations as unchangeable. We avoid dealing with the real issue at hand by making blanket comments like "she never listens" or "I am always late."

The idea of assumption may also be traced back to the MONKEY brain. In this section, we store our preconceived notions and prejudices, and we make fast judgements without collecting all the facts. The assumption that we can know what other people are thinking, sometimes known as "mind-reading," is another kind of cognitive mistake. When we hold this view, we brace for harm and look for ways to avoid it. Unconsciously, we employ words like "must" and "should" that imply duty and blame.

If we don't catch and fix our own cognitive mistakes, they may wreak havoc in our personal life, professional endeavors, and self-perception. You may be better able to see and fix cognitive blunders as they happen if you work with a coach. Making meditation part of your daily habit may also help you become more self-aware.

While we can't change the wiring of our MONKEY brain, we are nevertheless responsible for learning its peculiarities and keeping it under control, much as one would with a pet dog.

What are some ways that you can stretch your mind?

You may improve your memory and mental agility with the help of games, puzzles, and other processing-speed-improving brain-training apps.

Nonetheless, it's possible that mindfulness training might be the most useful. Master the art of meditation. As a coach and an experienced practitioner and teacher of mindfulness, I can attest to the benefits my clients have seen from working on this skill. Including it into your daily routine until it's as normal as taking a shower is one of the nicest gifts you can give yourself and the people in your life.

Set aside ten to fifteen minutes each day to sit quietly with your eyes closed; if this is too challenging, you may sit silently while focusing on anything in the background. If you educate your attention muscle, it can be able to attend just what you tell it to. You learn that you may detach yourself from your thoughts by learning to take the role of a detached spectator of your inner mental processes. You learn that ideas come and go, and that you can decide for yourself which ones to focus on.

One of the most important skills you're developing is the capacity to recognize when you've allowed your mind to wander. With practice, you'll be able to identify distractions not only during meditation, but whenever they arise. There is nothing you believe that can keep you from reaching your full potential, and you are aware of it when it occurs. You are conscious of the fact that your internal MONKEY brain is causing you to make an intellectual blunder.

If we return to the metaphor of roads and pathways, this would be equivalent to installing more lights and signs to point the way to more desired and pleasurable locations in one's mind (behaviors). Brain training may lead to a more conscious response and perhaps even novel behavior by helping you identify and reframe problematic notions.

When a person engages in self-reflection regarding their own cognitive processes, they are said to be engaging in metacognition. The purpose of metacognition is essential to our well-being as human beings since 95 percent of our thinking is automatic. All too often, we allow our thoughts to enter a condition of automatic thinking, react, and find that it is too late. As a result, you may engage in undesirable routines like mindless snacking, obsessing over negative headlines, sending texts you'll later come to regret, and overspending.

Mindfulness training raises one's degree of awareness or consciousness throughout time. This allows us to strengthen our resistance to negative experiences, increase our capacity to regulate our emotions, and increase our capacity for joy.
