Strengthening Yourself from Within and Building Resilience Along the Way

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

The journey that is life is never smooth; it is packed with highs and lows, successes and failures. When faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable, feelings of helplessness and overwhelm are natural responses. Despite this, we each possess a storehouse of strength and resilience that can help us weather the inevitable challenges that life inevitably brings. This article delves into the topic of personal growth and offers suggestions for encouraging resilience on one's own journey.

Knowing One's Own Mental Toughness

The ability to tap into one's own reserves is not some rare and mystical talent. Instead, it's a trait shared by every single human being. Think of it as a muscle that needs exercise in order to get stronger. When we talk about having "inner strength," we're referring to the capacity to draw upon one's own emotional and mental resources to overcome adversity, meet life's challenges head-on, and come out on the other side more resilient than before.

Forming Routines that Foster Resilience

Characteristics of inner strength and resilience are inseparable. Resilience is the capacity to bounce back rapidly from setbacks, adapt favorably to novel situations, and thrive despite difficulty. Resilience isn't a fixed trait, but rather a one that may be cultivated and strengthened over time. Here are some strategies to help you strengthen your resolve along the way:

1. Acknowledge and welcome the fact that change is constant in life. Those that are resilient view change optimistically, seizing the opportunity it presents for growth. It's counterproductive to try to resist change when you can use it to your advantage by adjusting and strengthening your system.

2. Foster a Growth Mindset: Growth is the belief that a person's abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work and study. When one adopts a growth mindset, problems are seen as opportunities for learning and progress rather than insurmountable obstacles.

3. Build a support system: When facing adversity, it's crucial to have a group of people you can lean on for emotional and practical support. If you confide in reliable others, they may be able to advise you on how to handle a challenging situation better.

4. Practice self-compassion entails being kind to yourself at all times, but especially when you're struggling. Be as kind and patient with yourself as you would be with a buddy going through anything similar to what you're experiencing. You can recover from adversity more quickly and efficiently with the help of self-compassion.

5. Plan Ahead Chunk Down Your Long-Term Objectives: Reduce your massive long-term objectives to more digestible chunks. By setting and working toward manageable goals, you may maintain your sense of control and progress despite the difficulties you're experiencing.

6. Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help you maintain your equilibrium even when life throws you a curveball. These practices can help you feel more in control of your emotions and better handle stress.

7. Don't be embarrassed to talk to a therapist or counselor if you need help coping with a difficult issue. Taking care of yourself emotionally like this is crucial. They can give you advice and point you in the direction of tools that will help you become more resilient and handle stress better.

The Hero's Journey

A powerful allegory for the human condition can be found in Joseph Campbell's concept of the hero's journey. This plotting device has the protagonist undergo a series of trials and tribulations from which they emerge stronger and wiser. This journey is a demonstration of the strength and fortitude we all possess.

1. The Call to Adventure: Difficulties in life sometimes begin with a call to adventure, which could be anything from an unexpected move to challenging employment. Some may be frightened by this call, but those who heed it will be rewarded with growth and transformation.

2. The Road of Trials: The hero's journey will be littered with tests and obstacles that will force them to their limits. Failures, setbacks, and periods of uncertainty are all possible during these tests. However, every difficulty is an opening to show one's mettle and perseverance.

3. The Meeting of Mentors: Like the hero, we can benefit from the guidance and understanding of others as we travel through life, as depicted. It might be quite helpful to get input from others who have dealt with similar challenges before.

4. The Abyss: The abyss represents the darkest phase of the hero's journey, when it seems as though there is no way out. It's a moment of deep introspection and doubt in one's own capabilities. However, it is precisely in such moments that one's inner strength might emerge.

5. The Transformation: If the hero survives the ordeal, they will have changed for the better. When they finally recover, they have a deeper understanding of who they are, greater resilience, and new perspectives.

6. The return: Involves the hero's homecoming and the dissemination of the hero's newfound wisdom. In a similar vein, we can inspire and encourage others by drawing on our own wells of personal strength and tenacity.

The Importance of Adversity

One of the main reasons we become stronger on the inside is because of the challenges we face in life. No one intentionally seeks out hardship, yet it often serves as the impetus for great development of character. The challenge of adversity is that it forces us to dig deep within ourselves, to confront our fears, and to reveal our true abilities.

Consider the life of Nelson Mandela, who spent a total of 27 years in prison as a result of his opposition to apartheid. Mandela's inner strength and resilience were tested to their limits during his time behind bars. On the other side, his time behind bars had a transformative effect on him, and he emerged committed to bringing about both justice and reconciliation. His ability to forgive his oppressors and work toward a peaceful transition to democracy is proof of the strength that may be found inside oneself.

Techniques That Can Be Used To Build Character Strength

1. Make self-care a habit. Putting one's emotional and physical well-being first is crucial to building resilience. Schedule in time for regular exercise, nutritious meals, and ample rest. Take part in activities that make you happy and calm you down.

2. Construct Resilience thru Adversity: Instead of avoiding challenges, approach them head-on with courage and a positive, growth-oriented outlook. In proportion to the difficulty of the obstacles you've had to conquer, your resilience will increase.

3. Hone your emotional intelligence: being strong from the inside out requires that you know how to identify and manage your emotions. Emotional intelligence is necessary for handling difficult situations with poise and tact.

4. Learn to embrace setbacks as learning experiences rather than personal reflections on your worth. Adopt the mindset that failures are merely temporary setbacks and seek to improve your resilience.

5. Set and uphold appropriate limits: Setting and upholding appropriate limits in your personal and professional life is crucial to your well-being. Setting appropriate limits may help you avoid drains on your resources and focus on what really matters.

6. Make an effort to create an attitude of appreciation toward the good things that have happened to you. Being thankful can change how you look at things and give you the fortitude to keep going when the going gets tough.

7. Continue your study throughout your life: it will substantially benefit your personal growth. You can build resilience and self-assurance by putting yourself in situations where you will be challenged to learn something new.

Learning to rely on oneself and overcoming adversity is an ongoing journey with no destination. It calls for dedication, kindness toward oneself, and an openness to life's riches as well as its trials. Keep in mind that your fortitude is not a fixed trait but one that can develop and change as you go through life.

It's important to remember that you're not the only one embarking on a hero's journey. You can find help from people like friends, experts, and mentors. Adopt a growth mindset, take calculated risks, and view setbacks as opportunities to test your mettle. As a result of taking these measures, you will realize that you are stronger and more capable than you gave yourself credit for, and that you have what it takes to handle any challenge that life throws your way.

If you want to unlock your full potential, all you have to do is establish a stimulating morning routine for yourself.
